In this short video, IMDb tries to answer the question: where the hell was Batman?
Line of Events
Following the events of The Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin, attempts to take the reins of Gotham’s underworld. Aside from the bat-signal in the closing shot of the season finale, we didn’t get a cameo from Robert Pattinson in The Penguin. Colin Farrell fought hard to have his version of the Penguin smoke tobacco in The Batman (2022), but was unsuccessful. In his own series, however, the character is portrayed as a casual tobacco user with a penchant for cigars.
The tone and atmosphere are absolutely spot on
The DC Studios logo is seen in a rainy Gotham alley. An umbrella falls and the logo changes to the Warner Bros. logo. As seen on The Graham Norton Show: Lady Gaga/Demi Moore/Colin Farrell/Richard Ayoade/Jack Savoretti (2024).
Amazing is the right word
Rough, dirty and gritty, but Farrell manages to capture the air of charm that brought Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano. There are similarities to The Sopranos, especially in tone. There’s a lot of grim stuff happening in that opening episode, but there are still comedic moments that fit the tone and don’t undermine it. Where do I start with Farrell?
And Farrell as an actor completely immerses himself in this role
I love seeing talented A-list actors fully commit to roles like this, and the makeup/CGI or whatever they did to physically transform him into the Penguin not only passes the eye test, it looks incredibly realistic. There’s always the risk that if the makeup isn’t good enough or just a little off, it can be completely distracting. With the Penguin, it adds to his performance and the overall quality of the show because it’s so damn well done. I might be a little biased because he was one of my favorite actors before this show, but I think he gets well-deserved recognition for this.
Kudos to everyone involved in this project
I never switch on new shows right away because I prefer to watch all the episodes in one go, but I wanted to see how this one really turned out. It didn’t disappoint, in fact it blew me away.
